(The Countryside)

The scenes from the Japanese countryside. The farm lands and the fishing villages with its people are alive with a sense of simple but breath-taking beauty.

Text in Japanese

The word "Inaka" means countryside, but to Hymas it has a far deeper meaning.

"Most of the photographs in this publication are portrayals of locations far away from the modern cities, and nearly all of the pictures are of places where tourists hardly ever tread - so far off the beaten path that you could even say 'hidden Inaka.'
My overall interpretations of Inaka is wide ranging and multifarious such as flowers & plants, rivers & streams, waterfalls, mountains and the sea, lakes, marshes, hot springs, volcanoes and primeval forests; enduring in this vast network of natures bounty, are animals, fish, reptiles, birds, mammals and insects - all existing in perfect symbiosis as one Inaka family. Living amongst and with this natural family is the Inaka family of man - the farmers and fishermen who for centuries have tilled the land and fished the sea helping to sustain the nation with their toil and sweat. These are the people and Inaka regions I love most, for in these regions Japan's ancient legacy of survival with the forces of nature is still existing. When I converse with fishermen and farmers I learn from them the true philosophy of both the land and the sea. And the most meaningful wisdom I have learned is . . . . .

Wisdom 1

.........(The earth does not belong to man; man belongs to the earth.
All things are connected like the blood which unites one family.
Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons and daughters of
of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely
a strand in it. What ever ill he does to the web, he does to
his kin and himself.)

Wisdom 2

.........(Take care of the land, and it will take care of you.
Take from the land what you need, but need what you take.)

Wisdom 3

..........(Protect the earth with all your heart and soul, and in return it
will protect you.)
